They have a blue-white light (typical solar light) but look great day and night. Just enough light to see, but not ruin night vision. The light points down, so great for stairs and pointing out features. They mount easily, just need a drill and level. They need to be in direct sunlight for min of 5-6 hours per day to be effective. These babies put out a lot of light for solar - probably due to the higher-quality solar panel and the THREE batteries (rather than the usual one). The build quality is average - mostly plastic with a stainless-steel cover basically glued on. Two of the 4 I ordered had minor separation of the lower steel panel surrounding the lens, which did not harm the function and was barely noticeable. I am quite happy with the amount of light this throws on a 30 saguaro cactus near my pool. I have been very disappointed with solar lights in the past, even just for accent lighting along a path.
